Since the first (and so far, only) use of nuclear weapons at the end of World War II, the threat of nuclear war has been a source of anxiety for political leaders and the public. This notion of nuclear nonproliferation—which is movement for restrictions on the spread of nuclear weapons and their stockpiling—initially began through public protests and has since become a central aspect of the foreign policy of many democracies.
