Feature Summary

Cutting-Edge Content

College Accounting by Wild, Richardson and Shaw brings excitement to your College Accounting course in its extensive use of small business examples, integration of computerized learning tools, superior end-of-chapter material, and a highly engaging pedagogical design. College Accounting motivates students with real-world applications and examples including engaging chapter openers featuring real entrepreneurs. The text also includes the financial statements of Best Buy and Circuit City to further engage students by applying knowledge learned in the course directly to a familiar company.

  • Chapter Features: Whether we prepare, analyze, or apply accounting information, one skill remains essential: decision making. To help develop good decision-making habits and to illustrate the relevance of accounting, College Accounting uses a unique pedagogical framework comprised of a variety of approaches, giving students insight into every aspect of business decision making. “You Call It” ask students to take the perspective of an accounting user (such as an entrepreneur, small business owner, service provider) and use accounting information to resolve a business problem. Many chapters also include a tool, such as ratio, that uses accounting data to better understand company operations. Answers to You Call It boxes are at the end of each chapter. An “In The News” feature offers information relevant to students entering the business world.
  • Chapter Openings: Each chapter opens with Learning Objectives that are highlighted throughout the chapter body and end of chapter materials to help students focus their learning activities. The chapter opener also provides “A Look Back,” “A Look at this Chapter,” and “A Look Ahead” to inform students where they are, where they were, and where they will be going to help better direct them on their journey through College Accounting. Finally, each chapter begins with an opening story of a real entrepreneur that used accounting to help achieve success.
  • Chapter Preview with Flow Chart: This feature provides a handy textual/visual guide at the start of each chapter. Students can begin their reading with a clear understanding of what they will learn and when, which allows them to stay more focused and organized along the way.
  • How You Doin’?: These short question/answer features reinforce the material immediately preceding them. They allow the reader to pause and reflect on the topics described, then receive immediate feedback before going on to new topics. Answers are provided at the end of each chapter.
  • Marginal Student Annotations: These annotations provide students with additional hints, tips, and examples to help them more fully understand the concepts and retain what they have learned.
  • FastForward: FastForward is a case that takes students through the Accounting Cycle, chapters 2-6. The FastForward icon is placed in the margin whenever this case is discussed.
  • Demonstration Problems: present both a problem and a complete solution, allowing students to review the entire problem-solving process and achieve success.
  • Chapter Summaries: provide students with a review organized by learning objectives. Chapter Summaries recap each learning objective.
  • Key Terms: are bolded in the text and repeated at the end of the chapter with definitions and page numbers indicating their location. The book also includes a complete Glossary of Key Terms. Key Terms are also available as online flash cards at the book’s Website.
  • Multiple Choice Quizzes: In response to review and focus group feedback, the authors have created Multiple Choice Quizzes that quickly test chapter knowledge before a student moves on to complete Quick Studies, Exercises, and Problems.
  • Quick Study: assignments are short exercises that often focus on one learning objective. All are included in Homework Manager. There are usually 8-10 Quick Study assignments per chapter.
  • Exercises: are one of this book’s many strengths and a competitive advantage. There are about 10-15 per chapter and all are included in Homework Manager.
  • Problem Sets A and B: are proven problems that can be assigned as homework or for in-class projects. All problems are coded according to one or more learning objectives, and all are included in Homework Manager.
  • Beyond the Numbers: exercises ask students to use accounting figures and understand their meaning. Students also learn how accounting applies to a variety of business situations. These creative and fun exercises are divided into 7 sections:
    • Reporting in Action
    • Comparative Analysis
    • Ethics Challenge
    • Workplace Communication
    • Taking It To The Net
    • Teamwork in Action
    • Entrepreneurs in Business
  • Serial Problems: use a continuous running case study to illustrate chapter concepts in a familiar context. Serial Problems can be followed continuously from the first chapter or picked up at any later point in the book; enough information is provided to ensure students can get right to work.
  • Appendix on Accounting Principles: discusses a rules-based versus a principles-based accounting system. It also describes the objectives, characteristics, and assumptions of accounting principles.
