  1. Identify and describe the major events of the three periods of prenatal development (zygote, embryo, fetus).
  2. List and explain the principles that describe the effects of teratogens on prenatal development. Give an example of each.
  3. Discuss the various teratogens, or environmental risks in the environment, that are known to impact prenatal development. Give examples of the effects of legal and illegal drugs, environmental toxins, medical interventions, and maternal factors.
  4. Know the three stages of childbirth.
  5. Discuss the various methods of childbirth, including complications that may arise.
  6. Describe methods of assessing the newborn.
  7. Differentiate between prematurity, preterm, and small-for-date babies.
  8. Describe short-term and long-term effects of prematurity and low birthweight. Identify interventions that have been used to assist these infants (i.e., stimulation programs, parental contact).
  9. Describe the continua of reproductive casualty and caretaking casualty and how they interact in the determination of vulnerability and resilience in children at risk.
