Coverage of ethics throughout the text includes material on ethics and media monopolies, plagiarism, the ethics of information technology, and an attempt to formulate universal ethical principles that cut across different belief systems.
Material on gender appears in several chapters: gender in relation to person perception and to self concept (in Chapter 2); ethical standards for men and women and the different perceptions of ethical principles by men and women (in Chapter 7); gender and the family (in Chapter 8); and gender and mass media images, roles, and representation (in Chapter 15).
A unique chapter (6) on conflict and negotiation, retains its content on conflict resolution--including conflict among friends and families over the war in Iraq, and Martha Stewart's intrapersonal conflict over illegal stock trading.
Chapter 15, "Mass Communication and the New Technologies," retains a section on war reporting (including material on the concept of framing and the responsibilities of the press); the 2004 presidential debates and earlier presidential debates; interviewing and evasion in the mass media; and contemporary sources of news and their credibility.
All chapters have "Issues in Communication" boxes highlighting current critical issues in communication. The exception, Chapter 13 on public communication, has two important sample speeches that students can access online.
Chapter 13 on Public Communication retains speech examples from former President Bill Clinton's speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's speech at the 2004 Republican National Convention, as well as a discussion of Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 911 as a persuasive message.
