Civic Awareness Activities

Chapter One - Find YOUR Issue

This activity serves as an introduction to issues of civic importance. What do we mean by issues of civic importance? Very simply, these are issues that affect a community, either on a local, national or international level. Many contemporary issues are consistently in the news, and warrant our attention as public speakers. These issues include (but are certainly not limited to): world hunger, poverty, health care, the war on terror, the energy crisis, global warming and homelessness. As a college student, you might think that many of these issues have no bearing on your immediate situation. However, as members of a democratic nation, it is important that we exercise our right to free speech, to become engaged in issues that ultimately do affect us all. Find out more about these issues and more by checking out news or current issues websites (see the links below). Find a topic that is particularly interesting to you. Read more about it, and learn the different sides of the issue. Begin to formulate your own position. Be able to explain your position to others. Effective use of public speaking begins with thorough knowledge of your subject matter. Begin here!
