Chapter 12 - Adapting Your Message

You will often find yourself speaking for special occasions, such as weddings, funerals, dedications and other functions. Your specific issue might not fit into one of these settings, but there are sometimes opportunities to work in your message. One particular speech, a presentation to entertain, could be a good opportunity to look at the different aspects of your issue, and locate any humor that is inherent to your topic. Speeches to entertain don't always have to have a serious message, but they certainly can. Such a speech can often attract an audience that you might not normally get. Stephen Colbert gave a speech to entertain at a dinner honoring President Bush. Check out that speech as a good example of a speech to entertain. Mr. Colbert had a serious message beneath his humor. Be careful, however! Work to balance the humor with serious material in order to maintain credibility. See the link below for the Colbert video, as well as other links to find out how to advance your issue even further.
