Chapter 3 - Starting a Focus Group/Group Brainstorming

Having found your topic and introduced it to some of your classmates, it's time to delve deeper and learn how it affects those around you. Find a few willing classmates, and form a focus group. In this group, you can introduce more news articles and ask more probing questions. Encourage your group to talk about the different issues involved with your topic. You might want to create a concept map. The goal for you in this activity is to get to the deeper questions and problems that your issue suggests. Oftentimes, we focus too much on the surface aspects of an important issue. This deep group analysis should give you a better understanding of how you might be able to affect a change in your community. For more tips on small group/focus group work, see the websites below.
