  • Divided into seven distinct sections—Vocabulario, Ortografía, Gramática, Nuestro idioma, Escritura, Así se dice, and Para terminar—this Manual de actividades works in conjunction with the main text and serves to provide the student with additional individual practice.
  • The goal of the Vocabulario section is to help students build their vocabulary. The target words are taken directly from the Introducción, Lecturas culturales, and/or Negocios readings in the corresponding chapter of the main text. This section provides students with ample and diverse opportunities for vocabulary expansion by way of three different types of vocabulary-building exercises: matching words with their antonyms, completing sentences by selecting from multiple options, and substituting target words for their synonyms, based on contextual clues.
  • Ortografía and Gramática sections furnish additional practice with the orthography and grammar points presented in the textbook, respectively.
  • The Nuestro idioma allows students to practice some of the words that have been derived and borrowed from the languages presented in the corresponding section of the main text (Taino, Nahuatl, Greek, Visigoth, Quechua, Guarani, Arabic, and English). In this section, students match words with their definitions and complete sentences with the appropriate words based on context clues. Students make associations with some of the target words. They also look up definitions of other derived or borrowed words, then write the definitions in their own words. These activities provide students with additional opportunities to expand their vocabulary beyond what they would be able to do in a traditional Spanish classroom.
  • The Escritura section provides additional practice with the various writing techniques presented in the main text, such as comparison and contrast, the expository essay, and the argumentative essay.
  • The Así se dice section of each chapter covers non-standard forms of the language, cognates, false cognates, and loan words based on a given theme, such as en la oficina, en casa, and en los deportes. In this section, words and phrases in standard Spanish (formal) are juxtaposed to their equivalents in non-standard varieties of the language (informal), thereby highlighting differences in register. Students are also presented with true and false cognates in English and Spanish, as well as standard, accepted loan words borrowed from English. The two activities in this section are translation activities, which force students to think about the subtleties of both languages and thus refine their translation skills.
  • Para terminar is a brief culminating writing activity in which students write a paragraph about three things they did not know before reading the corresponding chapter of the main text.
