This series of photographs illustrates the day to day experience of soldiers during World War II. African-American soldiers were relegated to segregated units. Several of these units, however, played a significant role in the European front like this tank group in France. Segregation had kept many of these men from the front lines for months, even years. Once there, however, they achieved an outstanding record on the battlefield, in part as a result of the extraordinary practice and training they had received at home.
