This photograph taken during the Vietnam War in 1966 by Pfc. L. Paul Epley, shows two American GIs standing over the body of a fallen comrade after the day's battle was finished. The draft was instituted during this war, which initially took healthy sons from blue-collar America. Those who had a college deferment, or didn't pass the physical or written test because they were uneducated or unhealthy were generally safe from the draft. The average age of an American soldier during the Vietnam War was 19.
