In March of 1965, the United States Marine Corps became the first combat troops from America to land in South Vietnam. That August saw the start of the first major ground battle, called Operation Starlite, and involved thousands of Marines. This photograph shows a Marine private waiting on the beach during a Marine landing at Da Nang, Vietnam, and was taken by an unknown photographer on August 3, 1965.
