Altered Chords    Chords that employ chromaticism.
Chromaticism    Refers to the use of pitches foreign to the key of the passage.
Essential Chromaticism    Refers to the use of tones from outside the scale as members of chords.
Nonessential Chromaticism    The use of chromatically altered tones as NCTs.
Secondary Function    A chord whose function belongs more closely to a key other than the main key of the passage. The most commonly encountered altered chord in tonal music.
