Part 1:

Choose one or more of the instruments listed below and write a report about it.

PROJECT TWO: The African Heritage in Western Art Music

Research and write a paper about the life of one of the following Afro-American composers.

William Grant Still: African American composer whose musical works included African American themes and spanned the jazz, popular, opera, and classical genres.

Le Chevalier de Saint-George: Composer, violinist, conductor--and duellist.

Margaret Allison Bonds: African American composer, pianist, and musical director.

Tania León: Afro-Cuban composer and conductor,

PROJECT THREE: Ethnomusicology and World Music

Ethnomusicology is the study of non-Western and folk music.

Part 1:

Select one of the following projects and report on your experience.

  1. Attend a Native American pow-wow in your area and write about the music and your experience.
    1. Interview a Native American participant about the music he or she performs.
  2. Attend a performance by an ethnic music group--for example, a gamelan, a Celtic ensemble, or a mariachi band--and write about the music and your experience.

Part 2:

Find a compact disc of music by one of the following ethnic groups and write a review of the music.
