  • Physiology concepts are put in context with real world examples. The functions of each system are explained in the context of a specific individual, and interconnections are made between new concepts and content in previous chapters.

  • A Homeostasis theme carries throughout the text, indicated by an icon which shows the interdependent relationship between homeostasis and acid-base balance, fluid and electrolytes, and nutrition. These concepts are covered in the context of the body systems, not isolated in separate chapters. As each topic is relevant to homeostasis in the text, the appropriate section of the icon is highlighted in the margin.

  • Putting the Pieces Together ties the system covered in each system chapter to the other ten systems of the human body.

  • Cadaver photos are paired with illustrations. Students will ultimately be working with real bodies, not models and illustrations, therefore, they need to see how a real body looks

  • Clinical points make the connection between anatomy and physiology concepts and applications in health professions.

  • Applied genetics points focus on genetic applications to anatomy and physiology.

  • The effects of aging section is included in each system chapter to help students understand the ever-increasing geriatric patient population.

  • Disorders common to each system are included in each system chapter to help students understand the relationship of abnormal anatomy and physiology to pathology.

  • Spot checks are interspersed throughout each chapter to give the student an opportunity to check for understanding before moving on. The answers to these questions are found in Appendix C.

  • Warning icons alert the student to possible mistakes and misconceptions. Most students come to the course with preconceived notions of how the body works. These warnings help to dispel common misconceptions.

  • Case studies appear throughout the chapter to help the students make connections in real life situations.

  • Critical thinking questions are included as part of the chapter review questions in every chapter.

  • Word roots specific to the system are located in the beginning of each chapter, and common prefixes and suffixes are located inside the back cover.

  • A pronunciation key for difficult terms is located at the beginning of the chapter. Each pronunciation is also located in the margin when the vocabulary word occurs in the text for the first time.

  • Chapter mapping at the end of each chapter quickly directs the student to the location of all text, figures, tables, and review questions relevant to each of the learning outcomes. This feature also allows instructors to easily customize the content to meet their needs.

  • Chapter summaries and review questions are located at the end of each chapter. As with the rest of the content, all summaries and review questions directly relate to the chapter learning outcomes.

  • Outcome Tabs on the edge of the text page allow students to easily access the content corresponding to a specific learning outcome.

  • Specific learning outcomes give clear expectations and direct student learning. Every piece of content, including text, figures, and tables in each chapter, directly relate to the learning outcomes.

Connect for Anatomy & Physiology

  • Digital Dissection Manual - This drag-and-drop activity allows students to identify and label structures from actual cadaver images, preparing them for working with real bodies.

  • Body ANIMAT3D - This 3D animation series brings to life the most complex concepts in anatomy and physiology, offering students an additional resource that visually reinforces selected topics from the text. Throughout the textbook, an animation icon is located next to any content that is further supported by an animation. These also feature pre- and post-animation assessment questions tied to the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.

  • Digital Coloring Book - Coloring Book images are available as digital activities in Connect. By filling in different various structures as directed in the activity, students can test their knowledge of human anatomy in different views, and learn how each structure relates to neighboring structures.

  • Digital Atlas of Anatomy - These drag-and-drop activities allow students to identify and label structures on illustrated images, for additional exercises to master their knowledge of human anatomy.
