Exercise 2

Go to James Crawford's Web site on the English-only movement, bilingual education, and language policies in the United States (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JWCRAWFORD/langpol.htm). Explain why language policies are controversial with respect to the discussion on the Anglo-Saxon core in Chapter 3 of your text. How do language policies define the boundaries of American citizenship? Who can assimilate into the Anglo-Saxon core? Is it just a matter of speaking English?

Go to (http://www.uwm.edu/%7Egjay/Whiteness/index.html#Introduction). The aim of this "Whiteness Studies" Web site is to deconstruct the notion of whiteness in society. Explain what it means to deconstruct "whiteness."
