After reading Chapter 3, students should be able to:

  1. understand how the Anglo-Saxon core culture defined what it means to be an American.
  2. explain how the Anglo-Saxon core set the terms of competition between ethnic groups (i.e., the nature of the playing field, the rules of the game, and the players who would be allowed to participate in the game).
  3. analyze the effects of British capitalism on all ethnic subpopulations.
  4. understand how the Anglo-Saxon core serves as the yardstick for simultaneously defining the cultural norm and the culturally deviant-it is the measure of the identifiability of ethnic groups.
  5. understand how the Anglo-Saxon core facilitated the assimilation of white ethnics.
