Exercise 1

Go to the Office of Minority Health's Web site (http://www.omhrc.gov) and try to find data or reports on Native Americans. Analyze the findings in terms of the resource shares of Native Americans described in Chapter 6 of your text.

Exercise 2

Go to the Web site of the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development (http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/hpaied/index.htm). Click on "Research and Publications" and scroll down the "Working Papers Series" list and select the paper by Spilde, Taylor, and Grant entitled "Social and Economic Analysis of Tribal Government Gaming in Oklahoma." It is available to download as a pdf file. After reading the paper, answer the following questions:

  1. What is Spilde, Taylor, and Grant's assessment of the social impact of Indian gaming?
  2. Is it positive or negative for the tribes?
  3. Is it positive or negative for the states they are located in?
  4. Compare and contrast the authors' findings with the stereotype of the "Casino Indian" discussed in Chapter 5 of your text.

Exercise 3

Go to the Web site of the American Indian Movement (AIM) (http://www.aimovement.org/). Click on the link to the National Coalition on Racism in Sports & Media. What is the critique they present on the use of Native Americans as sports team mascots? What issues are members of the American Indian Movement working on today?
