After reading Chapter 9, students should be able to:

  1. apply the theoretical model developed in Chapter 2 to analyze the dynamics of discrimination against Arab Americans.
  2. distinguish between the different ethnic subpopulations subsumed under the labels "Arab," "Middle Eastern," and "Muslim."
  3. discuss the history of Arab American immigration.
  4. analyze the various stereotypes and negative beliefs about Arabs.
  5. understand how events in the Middle East and U.S. foreign and domestic policies have affected the lives of Arab Americans.
  6. assess the impact of 9-11 and its aftermath on Arab Americans.
  7. understand how escalating discrimination against Arabs, Muslims, and Middle Easterners is contributing to the creation of a new pan-Arab or pan-Middle Eastern ethnic identity in the United States.
