Several models have been suggested to explain the origin of the first true primates and relate their adaptation to an arboreal environment. They focus on grasping hands and feet and stereoscopic vision. Szalay's and Dagosto (1988) proposed one of these models, and Cartmill (1974) proposed an alternative model. What are the basic premises behind each model? How does each of these theories interpret arboreal adaptation differently and what evidence do they provide to support their respective models?

One of the Miocene hominoids with apparent evolutionary significance is the genus Proconsul, a form which lived in Africa between 21 and 14 million years ago. Although specimens in this genus show a great deal of variation, there are important features of the skeletal structure which suggest the importance of this genus. What are these features and what do they each suggest in terms of hominoid evolution?
