The phlebotomist must be familiar with the process and all the tools that are involved in venipuncture and dermal puncture procedures. This includes the various pieces of equipment used for the different methods of blood collection. In addition, the phlebotomist should know the ordering process, including paper or computer work that must be completed prior to blood collection. A proper blood collection procedure starts with the order, documents, and appropriate equipment. The actual collection of blood must be done in the correct order.
