The process of venipuncture and dermal puncture involves more than just the collection of a sample of blood. Equally important is how the sample is obtained and how the sample is handled after the collection. Some samples require special handling and/or processing before and after the collection. In some cases other types of specimens may need to be collected. In addition, certain tests are done immediately at the point of care right after the collection of the specimen.
