New to the Second Edition

  • Reviewer feedback suggested some minor reworkings in how and where certain grammar points were presented. To that end, here are some of the grammar changes that we made in the Second Edition:
  • The present progressive has moved from Lesson 8A to Lesson 2A.
  • Reflexive verbs have been moved from Lesson 5A to Lesson 4B.
  • Double-object pronouns have been moved from Lesson 4B to Lesson 5A.
  • The grammar explanation on direct object pronouns (Lesson 3A) has been significantly revised to be more accessible to students. In addition, the Instructor’s Manual, found on the Online Learning Center Website, contains additional information on how to present this often challenging concept to students.
  • Activities are now clearly marked as input or output activities (in the annotations of the Instructor’s Edition).
  • More pair work activities have been included to allow students to communicate with each other in Spanish.
  • New to this edition is an activity type called ¿Qué leíste? and ¿Qué escuchaste?, in which students work in small groups to recreate a short narration that focuses on a particular grammar point.
  • New Una historia activities have students make up a story based on four or five cartoon-like drawings.
  • Some larger lesson vocabulary presentations have been pared down to a more manageable size.
  • Supplementary materials have been added to the Instructor’s Manual, along with student self-tests, for some of the more difficult grammar points (such as direct object pronouns, listed above).
  • Many Vistazo cultural readings have been revised, and all now include instructor annotations for use in class.
  • All new Entremés cultural sections appear after every “B” lesson and provide in-depth cultural readings and activities that promote critical thinking and cross-cultural awareness. These sections focus on the regions of the Spanish-speaking world and on such topics as geographic and cultural diversity and what it means to be Hispanic in the United States.
