Chapter 10 discusses the responsibilities and objectives of the scene designer and costume designer, and of the elements they use in creating their designs. Designers must work within the overall concept as described by the director, using their creativity to enhance that vision and empower the actors. Each designer has other collaborators that assists them in the creation of their designs, including the technical director, stage carpenters, make-up designers, wigmakers and maskmakers.
In this clip, the design of a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is discussed. The chapter mentions that a scene designer may provide a central image or metaphor for a production. In this case, this image or “conceit” is the use of umbrellas.
