Chapter 11 discusses the responsibilities and objectives of the lighting designer and sound designer, and of the elements they use in creating their designs. As with the scenery and costume designers, they too must work within the overall concept as described by the director. These designers have been greatly affected by technological developments which allow greater flexibility and control.
In the video clip, we see the importance of lighting and sound design in the performance art work of Japanese artist Saburo Teshigawara. Since there are no words to communicate meaning, the piece relies on visual and oral elements.
