Chapter Three discusses the many ways that theater is diverse.

After reading this chapter you should:

Recognize the different types of theater that is done.

Be acquainted with the different aspects of the Chicago theater scene, and see it as a microcosm of the larger American theater.

Be able to describe the broad characteristics of traditional and avant-garde theater.

Be acquainted with theater that focuses on underrepresented groups such as African Americans, Latino/as, Asian Americans, gays and lesbians, as well as women.

Be acquainted with theater artists who see the purpose of theater as being involved with political and social change.
