Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: A Conceptual Approach

Feature Summary

Features of the Eighth Edition

The Manipulative Kit contains ten common manipulatives on color card stock together with storage bags. Each kit includes: Pattern Blocks, Color Tiles, Attribute Pieces, Red and Black Tiles, Base-Five Pieces, Base-Ten Pieces, Decimal Squares, Fraction Bars, Polygons for Tessellations, and Spinners for Simulations.

Virtual Manipulatives with all of the Manipulative Kit manipulatives are available on the companion website. These virtual versions of the Manipulative Kit components allow students to carry out various activities online.

Eleven Interactive Math Applets available on the companion website are designed to involve students in interactive explorations of some of the key concepts from each chapter.

Numerous drawings and photographs of crystals, buildings and many other types of objects illustrate mathematical concepts at work in the real world.

Spotlights on Teaching open each chapter with a close look at specific elements of the NCTM Standards that relate to the chapter content.

One-page Math Activities at the beginning of each section foster hands-on problem solving and group discussions.

Problem Openers in each section provide further opportunities for students to develop their problem-solving skills.

Research Statements in the margins illustrate how the mathematics being discussed relates to student performance.

Standards 2000 marginal boxes link the text’s content and pedagogy to NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.

The NCTM Standards and Expectations are listed in a table on the inside covers of the book for Grades Pre-K–2, 3–5, and 6–8 for easy reference.

Elementary-School Text Pages taken from actual textbooks show how key topics in the text are presented in the elementary-school classroom.

Historical Highlights familiarize students with the evolution of key ideas and provide background on some of history’s outstanding mathematicians.

Connections to Technology boxes highlight online resources that provide a deeper understanding of the topics being discussed.

Augmented Writing/Discussion Questions in each exercise set ensure that students have ample opportunity to practice their communication and reasoning skills. These include “From the Classroom,” a special set of problems that challenge future teachers to consider and resolve actual classroom scenarios.

Making Connections exercises require students to carefully review and discuss various elements of the text’s pedagogy, such as the NCTM Standards, Problem Openers, and Math Activities.

Mathematics Investigations available at the companion website expand on key topics from the section and allow students to explore these topics in greater depth. Mathematics Investigations are explored in a variety of ways such as: paper and pencil; graphing calculators, the online Mathematics Investigation Software or downloadable student-friendly Geometer’s Sketchpad ® modules.
