Making the Most of Technology: Due to the increasing emphasis on instructional technology—and the rapid changes in the field—Chapter 10 (Technology and Information Competency) has been reorganized and includes new coverage on topics such as Internet safety (including MySpace), interacting with instructors via e-mail, learning e-mail “netiquette”, and classroom Individual Response Technologies (“clickers”). Other new topics in the text include tracking your grades online, cell phone etiquette, using a PDA as a time management tool, laptops and digital recorders in the classroom, and text-messaging’s effects on writing. A new technology primer is included on the text’s website for those students needing basic computer information or a refresher.
Learning Styles: The terminology on receptive learning styles has been revised to more clearly identify learning preferences, and a new discussion of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences as well as a corresponding Try It activity has been added.
Using Resources: Many more potential resources are included throughout the text, and especially within the end-of-chapter Resources section for students to explore and utilize. Expanded topics include using campus learning centers, math tutors, learning disabilities, and an extensive list of possible college resources.
Maintaining Optimum Health: Greater emphasis on healthy lifestyles includes new information on the importance of sleep, combating weight gain during college, using MyPyramid, and finding help for eating disorders, depression, and suicide.
Academic Honesty: New topics include the consequences of buying papers online and online services instructors use to check for plagiarism.
Learning Strategies: Even more learning strategies have been included, such as detailed information on dealing with math anxiety, developing and utilizing notecards for study and review, and tips on forming an effective study group.
Managing Elder Care Responsibilities: A real concern for non-traditional students, a new discussion of elder care coincides with tips on balancing parenting demands with effective time management.
New Speaking of Success Interviews: These informative and inspiring profiles have been refreshed with some new faces, including former secretary of state Colin Powell; Yajaira Gijon (Columbia College Chicago); Jordan M. Miller (Surry Community College); Choung Dang (San Diego Mesa College); and Lindsey Beck (Three Rivers Community College); and Shante Moore (Kansas State University).
