About the Authors



Gérard Cachon The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Professor Cachon is the Fred R. Sullivan Professor of Operations and Information Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches a variety of MBA, executive and Ph.D. courses in operations management. His research focuses on supply chain management, retail operations and operations strategy; in particular, how new technologies enhance and transform competitiveness via operations. His articles have appeared in Harvard Business Review, Management Science, Marketing Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and Operations Research. He has been on the editorial review board of five leading journals in operations management and is currently the Editor of Manufacturing & Service Operations Management. He has consulted with a wide range of companies, including 4R Systems, Ahold, Americold, Campbell Soup, Gulfsteam, IBM, Medtronic, and O'Neill.

Before joining the Wharton School in July 2000, Professor Cachon was on the faculty at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University. He received a Ph.D. from The Wharton School in 1995.

He is an avid proponent of bicycle commuting (and other environmentally friendly modes of transportation). Along his wife and four children he enjoys hiking, skiing, fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Christian Terwiesch The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Professor Terwiesch teaches MBA and executive classes in the areas of operations management and product development at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also has held a visiting appointment at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France and is a close collaborator with the McKinsey Operations Practice. For his operations management courses at Wharton, he has received several teaching awards.

His research on product development and supply chain management appears in many of the leading academic journals, including Management Science, Operations Research, Marketing Science, Organization Science, and the Journal of Product Innovation Management. He is also active on various editorial boards for journals such as Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and Production and Operations Management.

Professor Terwiesch has researched with and consulted for various organizations, including a project on concurrent engineering for BMW, supply chain management for Intel and Medtronic, R&D pipeline management for Merck, and operations improvements for several large hospitals.

He is a cycling fanatic and is still racing long distance triathlon races in Europe and the U.S. Along with his wife and three children he enjoys spending summers in Europe.
