Learn to Predict and Learn to Predict Answer
Part of the critical thinking Predict questions that appear throughout each chapter, a Learn to Predict question now opens every chapter and is specially written to take knowledge acquired from previous chapters, and tie it into content in the current chapter.
A new Learn to Predict Answer box at the end of each chapter teaches students step-by-step how to answer a higher application question. This is foundational to real learning and is a critical part of helping students put facts together to reach that "Aha" moment of true comprehension.
Homeostasis Summary Figures
These specialized flowcharts illustrating the mechanisms that body systems employ to maintain homeostasis have been refined and improved in the ninth edition:
More succinct explanations
Small icon illustrations included in boxes visually represent the organ or structure being discussed
Less clutter with multiple arrows—easier to follow
Reorganization and Enhancement of Chapter 17
One of two Endocrine chapters, Chapter 17 has been reorganized and rewritten so that the hormones are grouped by chemical make-up, allowing the student to follow the content in a more logical fashion. For example, when students now read about classes of receptors, the content will be divided into the two major groups of hormones (hydrophilic and lipophilic), followed by specific examples of each mechanism of action. Reviewers have been delighted with this reorganization as it matches the way they teach the chapter.
