You are a teacher who has a student with dyslexia, a student with ADHD, and a gifted student in your classroom. What are the similarities and differences between these students? How would you change your curriculum to better meet the needs of each student? Think of one way in which each of these three students could help the other two.

The physical environment of the classroom, a teacher's presentation method, and the content of curriculum activities are just a few of the factors that must be taken into account when considering the optimal learning environment for each student. Review the list of teaching strategies for children with learning disabilities in your text. Choose two of the five and generate your own lesson for each that will address the needs of the learning disabled learner while also engaging the attention of the rest of your class. Describe any special accommodations that students with disabilities will need in order to successfully complete the lessons.

Look carefully at the example of an individualized education program that is provided in your text. From the viewpoint of a regular classroom teacher, think of three ways in which the setup and style of the form could be changed to facilitate better communication of the content. Are there any questions you would add? Are there things for which you would provide more/less space?

According to the U.S. Department of Education (1996), about three times as many boys than girls are classified as having a learning disability. Why does this happen, in your opinion? What can be done to change this?

What is inclusion? Is it possible that mandatory full inclusion may actually be "unfair" to some students with special needs? What does the research literature say? Do you believe that full inclusion provides the "least restrictive environment" for every student? Defend your answer.

Identify attributes of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model. What are the benefits of implementing this type of program rather than enrichment or pullout programs specifically for gifted students? Examine the possible challenges of implementing the program and provide solutions for overcoming them.
