Select one of the following questions and develop your response in the space below.

Independent Reflection: Developing Expert Knowledge

1
Think about the experts you know. Are your parents or instructors considered experts in their fields? How do you think they came to be experts and how long did it take? Based on what you know about how experts process information, which strategies do you think these experts use to organize, remember, and utilize their knowledge and skills? (INTASC: Principles 2, 4, 9)

Collaborative Work: Strategies to Enhance Memory

2
Get together with 3 or 4 other students in the class and brainstorm about the best ways to guide students in developing better memory and study strategies. Discuss how you might do this differently for children and adolescents at different grade levels. For example, at what age should students start learning effective note-taking strategies? For children too young to be taking elaborate notes, are there gamelike activities that might help them begin to learn the concept and value of taking notes or keeping running records of some event? Write your conclusions. (INTASC: Principles 2, 4)

Research/Field Experience Reflections: Capturing Students' Attention

3
Observe a kindergarten, elementary, middle school, and high school classroom and focus on how the teacher maintains students' attention. How effective are the teacher's strategies? Would you do things differently to capture the students' attention? (INTASC: Principles 2, 9)
