Do You Know the Basics?
(See related pages)

Those who support cultural literacy not only have a specific curricular content in mind but also have a clear idea of what a culturally literate test would look like. How would you rate on such a test? Assume that you have just applied to Cabin Cove Schools -- a place where you have always wanted to teach. To ensure that teachers are "culturally literate," the school board requires that all teacher candidates take a knowledge exam -- to be sure each has received an education in the basics, the things we all should know. Try your hand at the following questions and get a first-hand "feel" for the testing issue. If you score:

  • 6--10 correct: You have demonstrated an adequate level of general knowledge. You are culturally literate. Welcome to the Cabin Cove School District.
  • 3--5 correct: You have qualified for probationary status. If you agree to enroll in a number of courses at Cabin Cove College, you will be allowed to teach in the public schools.
  • Fewer than 3 correct: You have failed the teacher assessment test and will not be offered a position in this community.
How do you feel about the use of such a test to determine your future?
Do you think that it is unfair to measure your teaching skills and abilities according to this single dimension, or do you feel that it is reasonable to assume all teachers should be expected to demonstrate a minimal level of general knowledge and cultural literacy?
These questions and more have emerged in the past few years as the United States public has become concerned--some say obsessed--with testing.
