The cover of the new edition of Cost Management by Blocher, Stout, and Cokins shows clearly what the text is all about – the role of cost management in implementing strategy. While other texts explain how management accountants only provide information for decision making, the approach taken in this text is to explain how management accountants work with other managers to participate in management decision making to achieve strategic goals. This approach is consistent with the new reality of the strategic role of the management accountant in the organization today, a reality that has been demonstrated by numerous surveys of financial managers conducted by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the Big Four accounting firms, and large corporations such as IBM, as well as by the new (December 2008) IMA definition of management accounting. Relative to cost management research and practice, the text is mainstream; it reflects what cost management is all about today.
