If you were a pregnant woman, what are some substances you would consider giving up so as not to threaten your child's heath? Do more research on the Web about certain substances that cause birth defects. For instance, tobacco is widely known to cause birth defects, low birth weights and other health issues for newborns. Search for information about tobacco and pregnancy on medical websites, or see what people are saying about it in Internet chat rooms. In the Tobacco module, under Stages of Change select "Explore the Stages" and choose "Contemplation." Complete this assessment to measure your level of commitment about either smoking cessation or passive smoking avoidance.

Also in the Tobacco module under Wellness Assessments take the assessment "Tobacco: Are You At Risk? (Part 1)" as a non-smoker with heavy exposure to secondhand smoke. Compare your risk level to that of someone who is not exposed to secondhand smoke. Are you often exposed to secondhand smoke? Have you or has someone you know developed health problems as a result of passive smoking? Do you oppose or support state laws that forbid smoking in all public places, including restraints and bars?
