Chapter Objectives



Know the four basic types of political systems and the social and cultural features that are correlated with each type.

Be familiar with the defining features of foraging bands, in particular how conflicts are resolved and the roles that the nuclear family and the band play.

Be familiar with the defining features of horticultural tribes. In particular, you should be able to distinguish between the different kinds of tribal leaders.

Know the kinds of integrating forces commonly found in tribes. Specifically, you should be familiar with pantribal sodalities and age grades.

Know the defining features of chiefdoms, particularly the nature of their political and economic systems. You should also know how social status is determined in chiefdoms and how this differs from social status in states.

Know the defining features of states.
