This chapter discusses the roles that families, kinship, and marriage play in society. It introduces students to the different classifications that anthropologists use to study kin groups, descent, and residence patterns. This chapter also discusses what marriage is, what it accomplishes, and the wide range of marriage practices that exists among human cultures throughout the world.
