You are considering opening a child-care center after you complete your education and have the appropriate degrees and certifications. Your center will accept children who have been potty-trained, including toddlers, preschoolers, and children in the primary grades (for after-school care). You anticipate opening in an ethnically, culturally, and/or racially diverse area, and you expect that the parents of these children will come from diverse educational and socioeconomic backgrounds. You want to incorporate the parents as partners to provide an optimal developmental context for the children. Based on the information in this chapter: (a) What kinds of facilities/activities would you need to provide for the children; (b) what kinds of training might you provide to the parents?

Your next-door neighbor comes to you for advice. She confides that her husband has been repeatedly unfaithful. His behavior has been "erratic" in that she never knows if or when he'll be home, he does not participate in the children's school and extracurricular activities, and the two of them spend most of their time together either arguing or in icy silence. She has suggested that they see a marriage counselor, but he says he is perfectly happy with the way things are. She tells you that she is considering leaving him and asks you what the effect might be on her children if she divorces him. She has heard that even in the worst of relationships, it is better for the partners to stay together "for the sake of the children." Short of giving her legal advice (other than "see an attorney to learn what you can do and what your rights are"), what can you tell her about the effects of divorce on children and how she can minimize the trauma to her children in the event of a divorce?
