Map A. Mongol Empires


This interactive map illustrates the rapid rise and equally rapid downfall of the Mongol Empire that was created under Chinggis Khan. In the late twelfth century, a Mongol warrior by the name of Temujin began uniting the fractious Mongol clans and, in 1206, succeeded in creating a confederation, for which he was given the title of Chinggis Khan. Khan then led his armies into China, Afghanistan, and Persia. After his death in 1227, the empire that Chinggis Khan had established was divided into four separate realms.
