When the Mongols' Yuan Dynasty ended in chaos in 1368, China fell into the hands of the man who would become Emperor Hongwu. Raised in a Buddhist monastery, Emperor Hongwu had risen to prominence in the army and been a key player in the erosion of Mongol control in China. Under the Ming Dynasty, traces of Mongol rule were eradicated and every effort was made, once again, to return China to a Chinese state.
