New to the Fourth Edition

  • The Correspondance feature of previous editions has been replaced by the new Blog section. Written by four Parisian characters with different Francophone backgrounds, the blogs introduce students to life and culture in France, Switzerland, Canada, Louisiana, North Africa, and the French Antilles. Through the blogs and the commentaries of other French-speakers, students are also exposed to contemporary French. Follow-up questions are provided in the instructor’s annotations.
  • In the all-new Video Program, the four blog characters film themselves and each other and illustrate their blogs with original cultural footage shot in Paris, Martinique, Morocco, and Canada. New activities focusing on cross-cultural comparisons support the video program.
  • The revised Reportage readings, which explore cultural, social, and historical topics that address current interests and technological advancements of the twenty-first century, have been updated to match the new cultural content of the blogs. These readings are followed by À vous! comprehension questions.
  • The Bienvenue dans le monde francophone section in the textbook has been expanded to include four additional readings, one each on Louisiana, Morocco, Switzerland, and Tahiti. A brief portrait of an important figure from each of these places is also included in this section.
  • A beautiful, new, contemporary design matches the updated content.
  • Scope and sequence changes are limited to Chapitres 7 and 8. The passé composé with avoir has been moved to Chapitre 7, Leçon 3; the passé composé with être remains in Chapitre 8 (moved forward to Leçon 2) to give students more opportunity to practice the past tense before the end of the semester. Il faut now appears in Leçon 3 of Chapitre 8.
  • The new ActivityPak contains interactive activities to practice chapter vocabulary and grammar. These activities formerly comprised the Interactive CD-ROM, but now they are completely online for easy one-stop access to online activities and practice.
