Paul D. Sweeney, University of Central Florida
Dean B. McFarlin, University of Dayton

Meet the Authors

Paul D. Sweeney is Professor in the College of Business at the University of Central Florida, where he also serves as the Chair of the Department of Management. Like his co-author, Dr. Sweeney was previously an Associate Professor of Management at Marquette University--where he has taught a variety courses in organizational behavior, management, and business statistics since 1987. Prior to this, Sweeney was a member of the technical staff at Bell Communications Research in New Jersey. He also taught at the University of Pittsburgh (where he earned his Ph.D), and Indiana University.

Sweeney has over 100 publications and conference presentations, many co-authored with McFarlin. His articles have appeared in prominent management publications such as Academy of Management Journal, Human Resource Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. He is a co-author of a 1998 book, International Management: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities, published by ITP/Southwestern. His research interests include organizational justice, cross-cultural management, and leadership. Recently, he has studied the various ways that employees from a number of different countries determine they've been fairly treated by their organization.

On a personal level, he collects and catalogs fungi gleaned from a variety of sources. Additionally, he is in the process of finalizing a system that classifies the complete body of work of the Village People (e.g., YMCA = Kirshel.132, etc.). Finally, he is the Vice-President of the Orlando chapter of the Jan Michael Vincent Fan club.

Dean B. McFarlin joined the School of Business Administration at The University of Dayton as a Professor of Management on January 1, 1999. McFarlin was previously an Associate Professor of Management at Marquette University--where he has taught MBA courses in leadership, international management, and organizational behavior since 1986. In 1997 he was named an Adjunct Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he created (and presents) an ongoing leadership development course for health care executives via the internet. Before coming to Marquette, McFarlin was a consultant at BOSTI, Inc., a Buffalo-based firm. He also taught at SUNY-Buffalo (where he earned his Ph.D), SUNY-Albany, and Niagara University.

McFarlin has over 100 publications and conference presentations to his credit. His articles have appeared in prominent management publications such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Human Resource Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. He is the lead author of a 1998 book, International Management: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities, published by ITP/Southwestern. In 1998, McFarlin was named a Consulting Editor at the Journal of Organizational Behavior, one of the leading academic journals in his field. This editorship involves coordinating peer reviews and making publication decisions about submitted manuscripts. McFarlin is the only faculty member from a Catholic university serving in an editorial capacity at J.O.B. His current interests include cross-cultural management, organizational justice, and leadership. For instance, McFarlin is the lead author of a 1999 article on management development in South Africa. Along with colleague Paul Sweeney, McFarlin also has a forthcoming book chapter on cross-cultural issues in organizational justice. Likewise, McFarlin and Sweeney recently published a book on narcissistic leadership (House of Mirrors: The Untold Truth about Narcissistic Leaders-and How to Survive Them, by Kogan Page Ltd., London). McFarlin's "works in progress" include both book projects and empirical research in these and related areas.

McFarlin writes a monthly column on management issues for The Business News ("The Leading Edge") and has been cited in numerous print media on a variety of organizational behavior issues (including major newspapers like The Washington Post, as well as local publications like the Dayton Daily News, The Milwaukee Business Journal, and The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel). He has also done radio call-in shows (e.g., for local National Public Radio affiliates) and written articles for the business press on management issues (e.g., Corporate Report Wisconsin). Finally, McFarlin has consulted for and presented leadership development seminars to a variety of firms, including: Allen-Edmonds, A.O. Smith, General Electric, and Wisconsin Natural Gas Co.
