About the Authors



Peter J. Dowling (PhD, Flinders University of South Australia) is Professor of Human Resource Management at La Trobe University. Previous appointments include The University of Melbourne, Monash University, the University of Tasmania, University of Canberra and Victoria University of Wellington. He has also held visiting appointments in the United States at Cornell University and Michigan State University and in Germany at the University of Paderborn and the University of Bayreuth.

He has co-authored a number of books including: International Human Resource Management: Managing People in a Multinational Context (5th edn); and Strategic Management: Competitiveness and Globalisation (Pacific Rim 3rd edn). He has also written or co-authored over seventy journal articles and book chapters and serves on the editorial boards of Journal of World Business, Management International Review, Journal of International Management, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Thunderbird International Business Review, Journal of Management & Organization, ZfP-German Journal of Human Resource Research and Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources.

Peter is a past National Vice President of the Australian Human Resources Institute, past Editor of Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources (1987–1996) and a Life Fellow of the Australian Human Resources Institute. Currently, he is a Vice President of the Australia and New Zealand International Business Academy, President of the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management (IFSAM) and a Senior Research Affiliate of the Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies at Cornell University.

Peter Liesch (PhD, University of Queensland) is Professor of International Business and Chair of the Strategy Cluster in the UQ Business School at The University of Queensland, Australia. He joined The University of Queensland in 1999 after several years at The University of Tasmania where he was Professor of Management in International Business and Head of the School of Management. He is a Professional Member of the Economic Society of Australia (Qld. Inc) and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. His PhD in economics was written on the topic of government mandatedcountertrade and he has a book on this title.

He has published many book chapters and articles in leading academic journals including: Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of World Business, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Management Studies, Management International Review, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Management Decision, International Journal of Technology Management, Prometheus, Industrial Marketing Management, European Journal of Marketing, International Journal of Innovation Management, International Marketing Review and others. He is Editor of the Management & Entrepreneurship Department at the Journal of World Business and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of International Management. He has current research funding from the Australian Research Council for projects that include the accelerated internationalisation of born global firms, Chinese attitudes to and opinions of Australia and their influence on Sino–Australian business exchange, and institutional logics in organisations. He recently completed a research collaboration with the Australian Business Foundation on the ‘Born to be Global’ project.

Sid Gray (PhD, University of Lancaster) is Professor of International Business in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney. He was Head of the Faculty’s Business School from 2003–2006 and Associate Dean (International) from 2006–2008. Prior to joining Sydney University in 2003 he was the Foundation Professor of International Business at the University of New South Wales. He was also formerly Professor of International Business at the Warwick Business School in England and Professor of Accounting and Finance at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Sid’s main teaching and research interests are in the areas of international accounting and corporate transparency, international business strategy and cross-cultural management. He has published books and articles across these areas.

He is a co-founder and Associate Editor of the Journal of International Financial Management and Accounting (USA) and a member of the editorial boards of a number of leading international business journals including Journal of International Business Studies and Management International Review. He was the first non-American to win the American Accounting Association’s International Accounting Section Outstanding International Accounting Educator Award for his sustained contributions to research and teaching. He has also served as Secretary General of the European Accounting Association and Chair of the British Accounting Association. He is a co-founder of the Australia and New Zealand International Business Academy (ANZIBA), serving as President from 2002–2004, and a co-founder of the recently formed Australia and New Zealand Chapter of AIB. He is currently serving as Vice President—International for the American Accounting Association.

Charles W L Hill (PhD, University of Manchester) is Professor of Management and Organisation and Hughes M and Katherine G. Blake Endowed Professor in Business Administration in the Michael G Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. Prior to joining the University of Washington in 1988 he also served on the faculties of Michigan State University, Texas A&M and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. Professor Hill has published over 40 articles in peer reviewed academic journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science. He has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science. Between 1993 and 1996 he was consulting editor at the Academy of Management Review.

Professor Hill teaches in the MBA, executive MBA, management and PhD programs at the University of Washington. He has received awards for teaching excellence in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Management programs. He has also taught on customised executive programs. Professor Hill works on a consulting basis with a number of organisations. His clients have included ATL, Boeing, BF Goodrich, Hexcel, House of Fraser, Microsoft, Seattle City Light, Tacoma City Light, Thompson Financial Services and Wizards of the Coast. Professor Hill’s current research is focused on strategic decision making in industries characterised by rapid technological change and strategy making in the face of uncertainty and complexity.
