Leading by example: Each explanation
of a new technique is accompanied by several worked examples, which
demonstrate the how the calculation is performed. These are designed
to show students how to work out the mathematical process, and how
to apply seemingly complex or abstract techniques to a relevant
business problem. Learning through exercises: Students
can then work through the text checking their understanding in the
many end-of-section exercises interspersed in the text. Case studies
also conclude each part, which test students' ability to combine
a number of maths techniques, and familiarise them with real-life
business decisions. Solutions to a number of the exercises are provided
on the CD-ROM accompanying the book, in order for students to monitor
their own progress. Accessibility: The Foundations section
of the text begins with the most fundamental techniques of elementary
arithmetic and algebra for students who need to refresh their memory
of basic maths. Its straightforward and clear approach encourages
even the most inexperienced mathematician to then progress confidently
through the later sections, applying statistics, probability and
maths to business. Flexibility: The text covers a broad
range of techniques suitable for most syllabi in QM for business,
management, finance or similar degree programmes. The flexible topic
flow, whereby material is delivered in short, self-contained sections,
allows the lecturer the flexibility to combine a choice of topics
that can be tailored to suit his or her module. Supportive pedagogy: The text has
been designed to be as helpful and clear as possible, particularly
to aid students apprehensive about maths. Section prerequisites
explain what the student should have mastered before they start
each new topic, which helps to link topics and techniques together.
Objectives then tell them what they should understand when they
have completed the section and a summary and key point box help
to reinforce and clarify the most important rules in each chapter.
Innovative signpost references in the margin of the text enable
students to navigate through the book, so that they can troubleshoot
when they don't understand, and go back to recap appropriate concepts
covered earlier in the text. Integration of Microsoft Excel: The
text also introduces students to Microsoft Excel, as the most widely
used spreadsheet tool for business, and demonstrates through examples
and tips how to conduct accurate spreadsheet calculations. Margin
references in the text direct students to Microsoft Excel worksheets
on the accompanying CD-ROM, where they can manipulate the data and
master the program. |
