Case Studies

Surrey Satellite Technology
In the modern knowledge-based economy, there is very considerable interest in technological entrepreneurship and, as Galbraith (1985) has recognised, the complex relationship between universities, government research establishments and established firms. The aim is to exploit the intellectual property that is generated from research and to encourage technological commercialisation and exploitation in order to create vibrant economies similar to those found in Silicon Valley or Route 128 in Boston.

This additional case has been written from that perspective. It is about Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL).

Stelios Haji-Ionnou and the easyGroup
There is no such thing as bad publicity – or so it would seem for easyJet. Despite a weekly television documentary charting the day-to-day operational difficulties of Europe’s biggest low-price airline, on November 26th 2002 the company beat the expectations of City analysts and registered record pre-tax profits of £71.6 million in the year ending September 30th, 2002 – and this despite a £374 million takeover of rival airline Go Fly. This case examines the company's success.
