Feature Summary| Mathematics For Elementary Teachers: An Activity Approach provides instructors with activities and materials to actively engage students in mathematical explorations. Active Learning: Each of the 34 activity sets use physical materials or visual models to provide a context for increased understanding and retention.
The Manipulative Kit contains ten common manipulatives on color card stock together with storage bags. Each kit includes: Pattern Blocks, Color Tiles, Attribute Pieces, Red and Black Tiles, Base-Five Pieces, Base-Ten Pieces, Decimal Squares, Fraction Bars, Polygons for Tessellations and Spinners for Simulations.Virtual Manipulatives with all of the Manipulative Kit manipulatives and more are available on the companion website. These virtual versions of the Manipulative Kit components allow students to carry out various activities online and print them for homework assignments.Eleven Interactive Math Applets available on the companion website are designed to involve students in interactive explorations of some of the key concepts from each chapter.Follow-Up Questions and Activities at the end of each Activity Set ask students to explore more deeply math concepts introduced in the Activity Set, to relate the concepts and activities to the elementary classroom, and to determine at what grade levels the chapter material is recommended in the NCTM Standards.
The NCTM Standards and Expectations are listed in a table at the end of the book for Grades Pre-K–2, 3–5, and 6–8 for easy reference.Elementary School Activities, located at the end of each chapter, illustrate how ideas and manipulatives used in the chapter can be adapted for use in an elementary school classroom.New Full Color format displays manipulatives, diagrams and photos realistically to strengthen pedagogy and conceptual learning.Cooperative Learning: Each of the activity sets are designed so they can be completed by students individually or in small groups.
Individual Reflections: The framework of questions provided in each activity set encourage students to describe patterns, discuss their thinking and thought processes, as well as write explanations of their reasoning.Just for Fun activities at the end of each section relate the Activity Set to recreational activities or have an artistic aspect.Elementary School Text Pages are inserted throughout the text to illustrate how the concepts are included in elementary or middle school textbooksMathematics Investigations available at the companion website expand on key topics from the section and allow students to explore these topics in greater depth. Mathematics Investigations are explored in a variety of ways such as: paper and pencil; graphing calculators, the online Mathematics Investigation Software or downloadable student-friendly Geometer’s Sketchpad ® modules. |
