Measurement
Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: A Conceptual Approach

Chapter Description

Chapter 10 Measurement

Activity Set 10.1 Measuring with Metric Units
The metric units are introduced and experienced through activities that ask the students to estimate lengths or volumes in metric units and then test their estimates by measuring with metric rulers from the Material Cards. Metric measurement games also stress estimation before measuring.
Just for Fun: Centimeter Racing Game

Activity Set 10.2 Areas on Geoboards
The concept of area is explored by developing different methods to determine the areas of various geoboard figures. Geoboard techniques are then used as students discover formulas for determining the areas of parallelograms and triangles.
Just for Fun: Pentaminoes

Activity Set 10.3 Models for Volume and Surface Area
Models for prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones are constructed and their volumes and surface areas determined. Students are asked to examine, predict and determine volume relationships: half of a cone to a cone; spheres packed in boxes or cylinders; and surface area to volume.
Just for Fun: Soma Cubes
