Culture is always a difficult topic to introduce to students who have no anthropology background. The trick is to convey the idea of the concept without muddying the presentation too much with disclaimers and controversies. The approach used is to cover the essentials of the concept. First, three sets of definitions by well-known anthropologists are offered. The common features or themes of each group of definitions are discussed, and these are then integrated to present a consensus of what the concept means. The concept of race is discussed including details of why it is not a legitimate biological construct for human populations. Emphasis is placed on its use as a cultural construct. The chapter closes with a discussion of challenges to the use of the culture concept.
