Symbolic communication is presented in this chapter as the cornerstone of human culture. The traditional areas of linguistics are covered together with a discussion of nonverbal communication (silent language). Attention is drawn to aspects of linguistics that students find engaging. Emphasis is placed on creating an awareness of the importance of symbols in culture and how anthropological linguists study them.
