The goal of this chapter is to give students an overview of the possibilities regarding marriage, family, and residence around the world. The basic components of an anthropological kin diagram are addressed first in order that diagrams used to illustrate the text will be understood. Marriage, its forms and functions, together with a discussion of mate choice and marriage finance lead to a discussion of the family across cultures. Finally, common postnuptial residence patters are presented with a discussion of the functions of each. The chapter Try This prompts encourage students to analyze their own marriage and residence traditions, and family structure.
