(See related pages)

The aim of this chapter is to examine globalization and culture change—how it happens, how anthropologists study it, and what we know of barriers and stimulants to change. Three case studies are analyzed:
the introduction of hybrid corn to farmers in New Mexico, a case of economic change among camel-herding Raikas in India, and a case study of development with a negative outcome. Anthropology's perspective on globalization issues is introduced with focus examples from tourism and globalization and the media. Finally, change is examined in urban settings. This chapter and Chapter 14, "Applying Anthropology: How does it Make a Difference" are placed at the end of the book because at this point students should have the background to enable them to participate in the analysis of case studies.
